Rock n’ Roll: Vinyl Records for the Music Lovers’ Wedding

Vintage vinyl has been enjoying a resurgence in the digital age. Digital downloads just aren’t as satisfying as holding the object in your hands. Who wants to look at album art on a screen? And while many bands are releasing their music on brand new vinyl or plastic records, the old ones are still available in inexpensive abundance. A few weeks ago I went to a yard sale and bought fifty records for five dollars, and this isn’t unusual. Many thrift stores sell amazing vintage records by the crateful. For the music-loving couple, vintage vinyl is a classic, inexpensive, and readily available wedding object. It’s a great theme on its own or as part of a larger arts-themed celebration.
Invitations

Print your wedding details on a recycled record sleeve and insert. You can still use vintage records here, simply replace the labels with your own custom designs. Choose albums that mean something special—the first song you heard together, your favorite road-trip jams, or some romantic ballads that remind you of what matters most. Guests will have to play the record to know what’s on it so you’ll be encouraging music appreciation with your announcement.

Attach mini records to boxes of candy, organic soaps, or mini locally made jams. Or, you can simply give each guest a record you picked out specially. This will take some time but it will show guests that you really care. Choosing the perfect album for each person means thinking deeply about what that person means to you. I can’t think of a better favor!
Decorations

There are about a million different ways to incorporate records into your décor—from garlands of hanging 45’s to table settings (like in the image above). Display some of your favorite albums on the gift table, or hang them from the ceiling to create spinning musical mobiles. You can even use records as platters for food. Create cupcake stands with a 33 1/3, 45, and 78, like the one pictured below. It’s so cute!

The Sound Track
Despite state-of-the-art mastering, thousand-dollar subwoofers, and lasers, a digital file just won’t ever sound as good as a heavy, earthy vinyl (or plastic) record. There’s something about the tactile nature of a needle in a groove that gives music a presence, an unmistakable and irreplaceable physical body. Spin your favorites and enjoy the richness of pure rock n’ roll on your wedding day.
