Christmas wedding theme

Whether or not you celebrate the holiday, the Christmas season is one of the most joyful times of year. Trees are decorated with twinkling lights, houses have candlesticks in the windows, carols are always playing on the radio, and everywhere you look people are doing their best to embrace the season. Donations to charity skyrocket around Christmas time. People give gifts and food to perfect strangers. We all try to be better and more giving around the holidays. If you ask me, this is the perfect time to get married. It’s easy to let the seasonal cheer and goodwill become a part of your ceremony. You can also reduce your decorating anxiety by embracing the colors, motifs, textures, and foods of the holidays....

Bride and groom holding jars with names on them

No eco-friendly holiday wedding is complete without creative cocktails made with organic spirits. Take some time in the weeks leading up to your wedding to experiment with these recipes, transforming them into your own personal concoctions. Collect some interesting glasses from thrift stores or relatives to add a little old-fashioned class or kitsch to your tables. And don’t worry if the stemware is mismatched. There’s something incredibly charming and lovely about an eclectic collection of glasses. Plus, it will help guests keep track of their drinks. If you like, you can offer the stemware as favors, and each guest can choose his or her favorite to use for the night and then take home.

Recycled paper used for confetti

In this age of identity theft, more and more people are shredding documents on a regular basis.  You used to have to  bring your documents to a recycling center to shred them. Now, home paper shredders are cheaper than printers. And what is the result of all this shredding? Mountains of paper that may or may not find their way to the recycling bin. Instead of writing off your shredded secrets, use the paper for your wedding. It may sound crazy but people actually buy paper shreds for DIY paper products. This stuff can really come in handy! I’m assuming here that your personal shredded paper doesn’t contain state secrets....

Bride trying to hit a pinata at her wedding

Nothing makes a party like a piñata. When I was a kid, I begged my parents for a piñata for my birthday party. I couldn’t imagine anything more fun: an awesome cartoon-like character you get to smash with a bat until candy flies out. It’s every kid’s dream. Scratch that: it’s every human being’s dream! My parents came through. They brought me to a party store and let me have my pick. There were piñatas of every size and shape, from giant ice cream cones to Daffy Duck. I chose spider man (I was a comic book nerd even then) and delighted in helping my dad hang him from the tree in our front yard. Last year I went to my best friend’s wedding expecting something stuffy and serious. Instead, she had a homemade moose piñata! She said it was my gigantic spider man piñata birthday party...

Eco-friendly bouquet made out of newspapers

Recycled paper is one of the eco-friendliest materials for wedding decorations and accessories. It’s already been used once, so it’s “vintage” in the environmentally-conscious sense of the word. And when you’re done with it, you can recycle it again, perpetuating the circle. It’s also an extraordinarily versatile material. You can use it for small, delicate accents or for large, decorative projects. Of course, you should always feel empowered to invent your own paper creations but, if you’re looking for something pre-made, beautiful, and responsible, look no further. Here are some ideas.

Bridal party on a relaxing vacation

Admit it; you’re a little stressed out. You’ve got a million things to think about: decorations, vendors, mothers-in-law, seating charts, vows, rings, travel plans… it’s enough to drive even the most stalwart of women completely insane. Before my wedding, I was a complete lunatic. I hadn’t stopped moving in weeks and I certainly hadn’t taken any time for myself. Before I knew it, the wedding was descending, in all its flowery glory, and I didn’t feel ready—not by a long shot. If only I’d taken a day to unwind, to reflect on how much I’d accomplished and on what was about to happen, I think I would have enjoyed the day a whole lot more. Don’t get me wrong, it was magnificent, but I didn’t pay enough attention to my state of mind. Don’t make the same mistake. Take some time to treat yourself to some quiet you time before the wedding. After all, your happiness is the most...

Eco-friendly plant placement cards

There’s nothing more beautiful than natural wood: unvarnished, lightly adorned, and directly from the forest. Wood is neutral in color so it will complement any palette. Of course, many products on the market are made from felled trees, trees that would have lived for a hundred more years, towering high above. Instead, look for wedding products made from trees that have already fallen. Harvesting this wood doesn’t hurt the ecosystem. In fact, in many cases it frees up space for new growth, reinvigorating the forest with life. Here are some beautiful eco-friendly wood products made from found and scavenged trees. You can also get out there and scavenge your own! Just make sure you’re not bringing any invasive pests to your wedding along with your harvest (beware the emerald ash borer, for example).

Hand painted wedding cakes

Hurray for cake! Whether or not you make it yourself, your cake is your chance to show your creative side. You can opt for something fanciful and playful, an homage to an animal theme perhaps. Or, go for something simple and elegant, with clean modern lines. If you’re making the cake at home, give yourself plenty of time to experiment. Wedding cakes are much harder to make than they look! Here are some ideas for a stunning, creative masterpiece: the capstone of your perfect wedding day.

Retro style wedding invitations

I’m always advocating electronic invitations since they’re so much cheaper and more eco-friendly than the paper kind. But in a way it’s disingenuous because I used paper invitations for my own wedding. I just couldn’t let go of the idea of a material object, something my guests could put up on their refrigerators. I’m also a newspaper/periodical/book lover and to me, in a very real way, the Internet is the enemy, transforming all of my beloved books to pixels on a screen. Still, I wanted desperately to be eco-conscious, so I compromised. My invitations were a single sheet of recycled paper in recycled envelopes. All of the other information—accommodations, directions, venue details, etc.—were on the website. I also made the invitations myself to avoid excessive shipping and to save money. It was quite a project but I was thrilled with the results...

School themed wedding

I realize I may be in the minority but I loved high school. It was a time full of excited learning; great friends; opportunities for creative exploration; and a feeling of power, like I could take over the world. I loved college too. I met my husband in a Russian history class. How romantic, right? For us, school and learning are synonymous with happiness, intellectual stimulation, and boundless excitement. I wish we’d thought of giving our wedding a school-related theme! The world of education has a definite aesthetic. Classrooms are unmistakable as classrooms and yet, there’s a lot of versatility there. You can choose contemporary decorations, like white boards and computers, or go classic with heavy wooden furniture, chalkboards, big old maps, and books. Here are some ideas.

Mushroom style wedding cake

I came across these mushroom stickpins and was immediately transfixed: “what a weird and creative wedding favor,” I thought. Indeed, these are made with sculpey (that great craft clay you can fire in the oven). I’m kind of obsessed with mushrooms and hat pins—two strange interests, a twain that suddenly met. The find inspired me to search for truly original DIY favor ideas that I hadn’t seen before. And I’ve seen a lot of DIY favor ideas. Some of these are variations on the classics while others are totally new and bold. Enjoy!

Fancy bridal eye vail

I had more fun shopping for wedding night intimate apparel than I had shopping for my dress. I think it was because I knew those purchases would be just for me and my husband, and that we’d be experiencing them together on our very first night as a married couple. It felt so special and important to find just the right outfit, something that struck just the right chord: sexy, innocent, and fresh. Every bride has her own intimate style and this is a time to let it shine! I had a lot of fun teasing my fiancé about my wedding night outfit in the weeks leading up to the wedding. It was a great way to relieve some of the pre-wedding stress and to remind us both about what an incredible reward we’d be getting at the end of all the planning: each other. Here are some beautiful eco-friendly intimates for your big night.
