Christmas wedding theme

Whether or not you celebrate the holiday, the Christmas season is one of the most joyful times of year. Trees are decorated with twinkling lights, houses have candlesticks in the windows, carols are always playing on the radio, and everywhere you look people are doing their best to embrace the season. Donations to charity skyrocket around Christmas time. People give gifts and food to perfect strangers. We all try to be better and more giving around the holidays. If you ask me, this is the perfect time to get married. It’s easy to let the seasonal cheer and goodwill become a part of your ceremony. You can also reduce your decorating anxiety by embracing the colors, motifs, textures, and foods of the holidays....

Bride trying to hit a pinata at her wedding

Nothing makes a party like a piñata. When I was a kid, I begged my parents for a piñata for my birthday party. I couldn’t imagine anything more fun: an awesome cartoon-like character you get to smash with a bat until candy flies out. It’s every kid’s dream. Scratch that: it’s every human being’s dream! My parents came through. They brought me to a party store and let me have my pick. There were piñatas of every size and shape, from giant ice cream cones to Daffy Duck. I chose spider man (I was a comic book nerd even then) and delighted in helping my dad hang him from the tree in our front yard. Last year I went to my best friend’s wedding expecting something stuffy and serious. Instead, she had a homemade moose piñata! She said it was my gigantic spider man piñata birthday party...

Hand painted wedding cakes

Hurray for cake! Whether or not you make it yourself, your cake is your chance to show your creative side. You can opt for something fanciful and playful, an homage to an animal theme perhaps. Or, go for something simple and elegant, with clean modern lines. If you’re making the cake at home, give yourself plenty of time to experiment. Wedding cakes are much harder to make than they look! Here are some ideas for a stunning, creative masterpiece: the capstone of your perfect wedding day.

School themed wedding

I realize I may be in the minority but I loved high school. It was a time full of excited learning; great friends; opportunities for creative exploration; and a feeling of power, like I could take over the world. I loved college too. I met my husband in a Russian history class. How romantic, right? For us, school and learning are synonymous with happiness, intellectual stimulation, and boundless excitement. I wish we’d thought of giving our wedding a school-related theme! The world of education has a definite aesthetic. Classrooms are unmistakable as classrooms and yet, there’s a lot of versatility there. You can choose contemporary decorations, like white boards and computers, or go classic with heavy wooden furniture, chalkboards, big old maps, and books. Here are some ideas.

Wedding cake

Making your own wedding desserts is a great way to save money. Desserts are notoriously expensive; I spent more on my desserts (excluding the cake) than I did on the entire dinner! You don’t have to be a master baker to engineer a spectacular dessert table. Just give yourself plenty of time to experiment with recipes. I made a recipe a week starting a few months before the wedding. I shared my creations with friends and family and paid close attention to reactions. It was easy to see which ones were favorites (I’d end up with an empty cookie tin.) Use organic ingredients whenever possible—organic flour, raw sugar, and fairtrade chocolate are available at health food stores, while organic, butter, cream, and eggs are available at many local farms and dairies. Remember too, overly complicated...

Rose petals are the quintessential wedding accent. They’re vibrant and beautiful—soft and so alive. The rose is the universal symbol of love. Here are some creative ways to incorporate organic, eco-friendly rose petals into your wedding décor.

The rose petal-covered aisle is an image out of a fairy tale. The walk down the aisle is traditional and ceremonial: the transition from your parent’s child to your husband’s wife. Cushion your footsteps with bright flowers to symbolize your commitment and your love....

Rustic centerpiece

When I was planning my wedding, I obsessed over the centerpieces. I wanted them to be artful and interesting. I wanted to give a nod to tradition without being predictable or unoriginal. And I wanted to make them all myself. In the end it took an army of bridesmaids and several weeks of work to make my vision a reality. Looking back, I now realize I could have accomplished the same look and impact with far less elbow grease (and stress!) One of the most important things you can do for yourself before your wedding is to keep anxiety to a minimum. This goes double for holiday weddings, since the holidays are already a time of undue stress for most people. Don’t make the whole thing harder than it has to be. There are so many simple and elegant DIY centerpiece projects that are...

Eco-friendly wedding collage

For many brides-to-be, a wedding has been a lifelong dream. I used to fantasize about my wedding all the time—the Cinderella dress, the opulent feast, the glowing candles peeking from a crystal chandelier, the white horse, the doves—but my fantasy was about as close to reality as a ride on a unicorn. For one thing, I wasn’t thinking about being environmentally conscious when I was ten years old. For another, I didn’t understand how complicated it can be to plan such a large and expensive event. Fortunately for me, I wasn’t too invested in the fantasy. I found it reasonably easy to compromise the Cinderella dress for a sustainable silk gown (it helped that the gown was spectacularly beautiful!) Instead of crystal...

Honoring the departed on your wedding

Weddings are a time to honor the people who matter most. Sadly, sometimes those people have departed, but that doesn’t mean they can’t still be part of your celebration. I was very close with my grandparents on both sides, but lost three of them when I was young. At my wedding, I wanted to remember them fondly—to celebrate them as much as possible. I know they would have been so proud. I also wanted to honor my remaining grandparent—the last of her generation in our family. It was a very emotional day for her since it brought back so many memories of her own wedding and of her 52-year-long happy marriage. But she was so pleased that my grandfather could be there in spirit and that the whole banquet hall full of guests honored him on that special day. Here are some ideas for honoring departed...

Rock n Roll style wedding collage

Vintage vinyl has been enjoying a resurgence in the digital age. Digital downloads just aren’t as satisfying as holding the object in your hands. Who wants to look at album art on a screen? And while many bands are releasing their music on brand new vinyl or plastic records, the old ones are still available in inexpensive abundance. A few weeks ago I went to a yard sale and bought fifty records for five dollars, and this isn’t unusual. Many thrift stores sell amazing vintage records by the crateful. For the music-loving couple, vintage vinyl is a classic, inexpensive, and readily available wedding object. It’s a great theme on its own or as part of a larger arts-themed celebration.

Day of the dead wedding deco

With Halloween behind us, you might be feeling a little sad to say goodbye to the ghosts and ghouls for another year. Well, fear not, because The Day of the Dead is here! This might seem awfully dark for a wedding but it’s actually a very family-friendly holiday. It originated in Mexico as a holiday of remembrance and celebration, to honor lost loved ones and to celebrate life. It’s a day to feel the presence of ancestors, something that can bring some richness and comfort to your wedding day. It’s also just a whole lot of fun! The skeleton iconography is classic and macabre, perfect for a couple with a gothic sensibility. It’s also an opportunity to dress up but it’s after Halloween. Guests will already have costumes and they won’t be sad to miss out on Halloween festivities. Here are some decorating ideas for your...

Thanksgiving placement cards

I think of Thanksgiving as a DIY holiday. Of course, these days many people simply buy their wreaths, place cards, centerpieces, and side table displays, but somehow when something is genuinely made by hand, it’s just more beautiful. As a harvest holiday, Thanksgiving has traditionally included harvesting for the décor—gathering hay and wheat, apples, pumpkins, pinecones, and acorns. Bring that history to your wedding by creating your own holiday-themed displays that scream authentic and handmade. They will lend an air of farm living and true environmental awareness—things that fit in perfectly in an eco-friendly wedding. Don’t just say you’re thankful for the bounty, show your thanks with your own two hands. Here’s how.
