Hurray for cake! Whether or not you make it yourself, your cake is your chance to show your creative side. You can opt for something fanciful and playful, an homage to an animal theme perhaps. Or, go for something simple and elegant, with clean modern lines. If you’re making the cake at home, give yourself plenty of time to experiment. Wedding cakes are much harder to make than they look! Here are some ideas for a stunning, creative masterpiece: the capstone of your perfect wedding day.

Wedding cocktail

In the midst of the hubbub over food, sometimes special Thanksgiving wedding drinks get overlooked. Alcoholic beverages are a mainstay at many American Thanksgiving tables—from brandy and scotch to fancy mixed drinks and cocktails. Show your guests it’s all in the details by serving some clever holiday-themed favorites at your wedding. The lighter fare is best early in the evening, while the heaver, creamier drinks are best served with desert. Here are some of my favorites—mainstays at my family’s table.

Wedding venue

There’s no doubt about it, most weddings today are exorbitantly expensive. In 2011, the average wedding in the United States cost $27, 021! That’s a full year of college. It’s twice the cost of the typical down payment for a new home. Of course, we’re all familiar with the big ticket items that rack up the bills— opting for gourmet foods, the proverbial larks’ tongues in aspic; choosing a luxury venue like The Imperial Art Design Hotel or The Ritz Carlton; or going big and inviting 500 of your closest friends. But even a budget conscious couple will find themselves shelling out the green over a multiplicity of small must-haves: napkin rings, champagne flutes,...

Fall Foliage

If you’re like me, you love the great outdoors. New England in autumn is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Deciduous trees are everywhere and when they start to change the landscape is transformed into a brilliant canvas of dazzling color. People come to New England from all over the world in the fall, to hike and picnic under the trees and to enjoy the farm stands, pumpkin patches, and apple orchards that speckle the countryside. It’s one of the most romantic places, with so much history and culture. Many people think of the culture in terms of the cities, but it’s also evident in the old country homes and farms in the more rustic parts of the New England states. Quaint museums, antique stores, and bed and breakfasts abound, as do recreational activities found nowhere else: New England mushroom hunts, whale watches, and all-you-can-eat lobster festivals or clam bakes. Here are some unique and romantic...

Emerald green wedding gown

Non-traditional vintage gowns are a great way to showcase your personal style. While many brides truly love the idea of wearing white (and there are about a million different styles of white gown out there) for many of us it’s just too simple and predictable. Vintage gowns have innate personality. They’ve got history and life. They’re the remnants of  bygone eras—times when the trends were so foreign to present day , when the common aesthetic was rooted in very different cultural mores. If you don’t quite feel like you fit in the modern day, your idea of what’s beautiful is old-fashioned or quirky, and you want to embrace your offbeat nature, a non-traditional vintage gown may be just the thing. Shopping for vintage gowns can be tricky since sizing has changed so dramatically in the past few decades. Make sure you try on the gown before you buy it (or make sure there is a...

Green Riviera

Being friendly to the environment is a shared activity at the Sandos Caracol Eco-Resort & Spa, which already boasts one of the greenest settings on Mexico's Mayan Riviera. Once you've explored the lush surroundings, test your green thumb with the Plant-A-Tree program. (Yep, you get to dig and plant on the hotel grounds.) Retreat to your eco-friendly room, which has been upgraded to reduce CO2 emissions by 75 percent. Among the green features: low electrical consumption air conditioning, solar water heating, and furniture made from certified wood. Put the "spring" back into Spring Break.

If you’ve been paying attention to wedding trends lately, you’ll notice a lot of brides using mason jars on their big day. We’re not surprised: mason jars provide a lot of fantastic uses that make them a great addition to any occasion, especially a green wedding!
