The most popular green wedding website, Green Bride Guide, has announced the winning couple in its first in a series of reader participation contests. The Engagement Story Contest, featuring the engagement stories of five couples chosen as finalists, concluded a week ago. Readers chose Jaymie and Zach's story, entitled "Redwood Creek Romance," as the winning entry.
A committee of judges made up of Green Bride Guide team members and wedding professionals selected the five finalists from a large pool of entrants into the contest. The finalists were chosen based on the creativity of their stories and the demonstration of their green values. Readers had two weeks to vote for the best engagement story.
"We congratulate Jaymie and Zach, the winners of our Engagement Story Contest, and we're thrilled with the success of our first contest designed to promote and foster our community of engaged eco-conscious couples," said Kate Harrison, CEO of the Green Bride Guide and author of The Green Bride Guide: How to Plan an Earth-Friendly Wedding on Any Budget (Sourcebooks, 2007). "It allowed readers to share their stories with each other. Future contests will give participants a chance to share their tips and ideas for planning an eco-chic wedding. The couples on our site as so creative and it is exciting to see what they are doing to go green."
As the winning couple, Jaymie and Zach will be awarded a prize pack of eco-friendly wedding goods and services valued at over $1300 for their May 29th wedding. Contest sponsors and prizes include:

* free offsets to balance the carbon footprint of the winner's honeymoon (value of up to $50)

Instead of registering for ‘stuff,' couples register for experiences they want to have and dreams they want to achieve with cash gifts towards anything they can think of: a new home, your ideal honeymoon, newlywed experiences, charities, etc.
The Green Bride Guide will begin soliciting entries for its next contest, featuring DIY projects, in mid-April.
Concern about the environment is a national priority, and many couples are looking for ways to go green. The average American wedding produces 400 pounds of garbage and 63 tons of CO2. With over 2 million weddings a year in the United States, small choices add up. The opportunity to pick up tips and trade stories with like-minded engaged couples can help in making green choices.
