Real Green Weddings
Ethan Merlin and Joelle Novey were married in Massachusetts on August 17, 2008.
About the Couple
Joelle is a writer at Green America (formerly Co-op America), and the co-author of a local Green & Just Celebrations Guide for DC's Jewish Community. Ethan is a middle and high school math teacher. They live at Eastern Village Cohousing, a green community in South Silver Spring, Maryland.
Location
Their wedding was held at Gann Academy in Waltham, Massachusetts. They chose this location because, "by getting married at a school, from which Ethan's brother had graduated, we were able to know that our rental fees were helping to support a worthy non-profit."
The Decision to Go Green
Their decision to go green was an extension of their life philosophy. "We embraced the opportunity to make green choices as a way of sharing the ways we hope to live life as a family going forward. Also, we tried not to do anything for the wedding 'because that's what everyone does.' Instead, we tried to ask before each decision: 'Will spending money on this element of the event increase the joy?' If it wouldn't increase the joy of the day, we didn't do it."
