Decorations
Derek and Rachel borrowed large potted plants from neighbors to use as decorations. For table decor, they created DIY table runners using crumpled and ironed brown grocery bags as instead of fabric. The couple also reused votive candles from other weddings, locally grown flowers from the mother-of-the-bride's garden for the centerpieces, and canning jars from the grandmother-of-the-bride's basement to hold the flowers. Drinks were served in biodegradable cups, while table linens were rented from the reception site.
Cake
Instead of a traditional wedding cake, Rachel and Derek served homemade ice cream made by a small company near Derek's hometown, as well as homemade cookies made by family and friends.
