A unique aspect of Louisa and James’ wedding was the Sofreh aghd, an Iranian tradition that honored Louisa’s heritage. In Farsi, Sofreh refers to a cloth and aghd means wedding. It is a tradition at Persian weddings to display symbolic items of cloth to represent the qualities hoped for for the couple’s life. In addition to the cloth, a table is decorate with with personal objects such as Persian candies and cookies representing sweetness, a book of Persian poems, a bottle of rose water to represent a perfumed life, Iranian coins for prosperity, and painted wooden eggs for fertility. The bowls and platters were all purchased at Goodwill, and the couple donated them back after the wedding.
