Real Green Weddings
The couple was married at Woodend Sanctuary in Chevy Chase, Maryland.
Woodend Sanctuary is “an old mansion built in the 1920s that houses the Audobon Naturalist Society, the largest and oldest independent environmental organization in the Washington, DC region.” The sanctuary has a commitment to being green, with energy efficient lightbulbs and heating/cooling systems, low flow toilets and faucets, and a recycling program. The Audobon Naturalist Society also prints its newsletter on 30% post-consumer waste paper.
After the ceremony, held in a grove on the grounds of the sanctuary, guests took a two minute walk to the mansion, where the tented reception was held. Having the ceremony and reception at the same location significantly cut down on the carbon footprint of the wedding by eliminating guests driving from one place to another. To reduce the effects of car transportation even further, the couple provided a bus shuttle for their guests from the hotel to the wedding site.
