Real Green Weddings
Doug and Alyson were married on June 26, 2010 in Sacramento, California.
About the Couple
Alyson and Doug have been best friends since they were thirteen. The couple met while Doug was in the eighth grade, and Alyson was a freshman in high school. After high school they both went onto UC Davis, where they were college roommates and where Alyson developed feelings for Doug. After college, Alyson went off to join the Peace Corps and Doug discovered he had feelings for Alyson as well. They maintained a long distance relationship for the two years Alyson spent in South America. Doug even traveled to stay with Alyson for her last three-month stay in Paraguay. Upon returning to the States, they moved into an apartment together in Sacramento, California.
Decision to Go Green
Doug is getting his PhD in Organic Chemistry and Green Chemistry, and Alyson is an elementary school teacher who constantly reminds her fourth graders that we only have one planet and every day is Earth Day. The couple thinks that creating an abundance of waste and buying one-time use products is absurd and unnecessary. Doug and Alyson love to live green, and limiting waste is really important to them. To save on resources, they did a lot of DIY wedding projects. Reflecting on her wedding day, Alyson notes, “The end result was that everything was so personal, and we really felt like we were sharing a part of ourselves with our friends and family. We were really proud that nearly every piece of our wedding was either local or hand-made, and it was a fun bonding experience to get everyone involved in all the little projects leading up to it.”
