Real Green Weddings
Lisa Harrison and Shawn Callahan were married on January 17, 2009 at their home in Biwabik, MN.
About the Couple
Lisa is an Emergency Room Nurse and Shawn is a Mechanical Engineer. They both share a love of skiing, so they decided a snowy winter wedding was perfect for them.
The Decision to Go Green
Lisa and Shawn live on a thirteen acre former mining homestead that originally had three barns on the property. A few years ago they decided to renovate one of the barns and turn it into a green and sustainable rental guesthouse; they call it the Green Gate Guesthouse. Shawn worked full-time to build this LEED Certified guesthouse, and the couple offers it for rental as both a place to stay and an educational tool for sustainable building and living.
When planning the wedding, Lisa didn't want the wedding to become too big or commercial. She and Shawn wanted to be able to celebrate their marriage but did not want to lose the real meaning of why they are having this wedding: to share their love for each other and the special people that would join them for the celebration. Having the wedding in their beautifully renovated barn was the natural choice for them.
