I utilize the tried & true method of the 3 R’s — reduce, reuse, and recycle. I start by minimizing consumption and waste. I do that by utilizing digital technologies to deliver images electronically, instead of delivering an actual physical CD or DVD, and the accompanying packaging and emissions that come along in that process.
When my clients do want prints, albums, books, or other physical photographic products I only print from labs offering recycled, eco-friendly, or FSC certified materials.
I work from a home office, eliminating any kind of daily commute. My home office utilizes smart, efficient, and earth friendly products & practices ranging from lighting, to cleaning, to recycling everything we can. My home office also features high efficiency energy star appliances throughout including: the furnace, blower motor, refrigerator, dishwasher, washing machine, dehumidifier, and all TV’s and telephones. Recently, I took advantage of a subsidized home energy audit, and was able to remedy various areas of energy loss to maximize efficiency and to reduce our environmental impact.
I conduct all of my business activities via my home computer and do not even own a printer. I communicate by email, social media, telephone, and in-person. I opt for paper-free online statements and pay bills via the Internet. I do not even own a checkbook.
I keep my business printing to a minimum, which consists of a limited supply of business cards and a very limited amount of print samples. All of these are printed to the same high standards, using the same eco-friendly labs and products mentioned above.
I also utilize digital technologies, and the Internet, to display my body of work and market my business to potential new clients. I pursue digital advertising campaigns instead of print ads.
On a personal level, I am a Vegetarian who opts to eat consciously. I choose organic, natural, and whole foods whenever possible. I also opt to support local, fair-trade, and non-GMO products. Being an avid organic gardener myself, I understand the importance of biodiversity and sustainably managed forests & ecosystems. I compost all of our food waste and use that to improve our soil and reduce the impact on our landfills. I also utilize rain barrels to capture rainwater for watering.
Other steps I take to make a difference include using reusable grocery bags, biking when I can, sharing my knowledge with others, and creating awareness in my sphere of influence. I truly care about the quality of our soil, air, and water. I make every effort to keep my footprint light on our earth, and even add back to the quality of it, however small those additions may be.
My passion for conscious practice and social responsibility is strong, and I remain on the path of continual learning. I’m always looking for new ways to improve in all aspects of my life and business. I also love helping others do the same in their lives and businesses.
Here’s to a sustainable, happy, healthy, and vibrant future for ourselves, and all of the future generations to come.
